It’s the place of coming together of people
Far from the madness of the city life, and the din and chaos of all that moder-nity has to offer, lies Shillim Institute, nestled in the lap of the lofty Sahyadri, on a pastoral 2,000-acre estate. Be it coming together for research works, contributing on rare projects or participation in events, Shillim Institute is all about spreading the consciousness on Ecology, Sustainability, Conservation, Community and Wellness, issues we all aware of but haven’t done enough about.
It’s the perfect melting pot of amalgamating newer ideas and greater vision, keeping the greater good in mind.

We are part of the earth and the earth is a part of us
Bio-Diversity study, Flora and Fauna mapping.
Every organism, small or big, depends upon the environment. Derived from two Greek words “oikos” which means habitation, and “logos” meaning discourse, ecology implies a scientific study of habitations of organisms. Shillim Institute converges both these thoughts and therefore is an extraordinary place for natural exploration, an adventure to be cherished, a habitat of thousands of animals, birds, insects, reptiles, mammals, butterflies and others.
Tree plantations, Soil and Water conservation works.
The Shillim valley is far removed from the dissonance of city life. Nuzzled in a cocooned valley of the Western Ghats, it securely lies in the forested carpet of the wild. However, even amidst this secure setting, the area is also subject to deforestation, slash and burn activities, cattle grazing and random commercial developments. Some of its mountain slopes have been excessively damaged, and while the Western Ghats region receives the full vigour of the southwest monsoons, it results in severe soil erosion.
Energy, Water & Food recycling practices, Organic Farming.
During the years of planning Shillim, “green,” “sustainable” design started to gain currency. LEED and other environmental guideline systems began to guide architecture and landscape design around the world. Between 1997 and 2012, the practices pioneered at Shillim early on — reforestation, sustainable storm-water management, grey water recycling, minimum-impact standards, for example – shifted from fringe to mainstream. Today the place uses almost 500 KW capacity of solar energy to run its administrative buildings.
Governments Policy and Acts research and practice.
The Institute is located at the Western Ghats and therefore the Indian Forests Act is applicable to the region. The main aim of policy research is to study various government acts, policies and reports related to the Indian Forest Acts and the Western Ghats. Research works are conducted in collecting, analysing, presenting data and gaps in reports while making meaningful recommendations to the Institute. These recommendations will further the projects for ecological conservation and sustainability.
Sustainable agriculture practices, Green Brigades training.
The Shillim Institute believes that empowering the local community is critical in making real and sustainable change. Special programmes for local communities’ help create employment for its members, enables the efficient running of the schools and effective functioning of health centres. Sustainable community development programmes are formulated based on the baseline survey and profiling of the local community that was conducted in the villages of Shillim – Kadav, Vageshwar, Bodshil, and Shindewadi.
Yoga & Meditation, Food & Nutrition studies, Forest Foods.
Maintaining an optimal level of wellness is crucial to leading a quality life. The optimal level of wellness is achieved by soothing stress, consuming a balanced diet, reducing the risk of illness and safeguarding positive interactions. Healing is a process of becoming cognizant and making the right choices towards a fulfilling life. It is more than being free from ailments; it is a dynamic progression of growth towards a revived self, of better health, happiness, and prosperity.
Flora And Fauna Of Shillim
Born in Mumbai, India in 1961, Denzil de Souza spent his working life developing the family business, P.N. Writer & Co. – a relocation company that was bought by his late father, Mr Charles de Souza, in the late 1950s. Denzil joined the business in 1978, which was then under the management of his father and late brother, William de Souza.
Their mentoring instilled values of excellence onto him and greatly influenced his work ethic and outlook on life. With William, Denzil transformed Writer from a single location, 20-employee, single service company into a multi-location, multi-business organisation.
Margie Ruddick has been recognised, for over twenty years, for her pioneering work in the domain of landscape architecture. Winner of the 2013 Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award in landscape architecture, Margie has forged a design language that assimilates ecology and culture.
Her transformative design for New York’s Queens Plaza has won awards for endorsing a new idea of nature in the city, where stormwater, wind, sun, and habitat merge within an urban infrastructure to create a more sustainable vision of urban life.
Karen is the last child and only daughter of the late William de Souza. She joined the Shillim Institute as Director in January 2015. She studied international business management and economics in Brussels and is fluent in French. Her father’s love for nature instilled a calling to conservation, as a young girl, through their visits to the Western Ghats.
Her interest in sustainability began nearly a decade ago with a growing interest in food. While working in Brussels with a renowned Michelin Star chef, she understood the relationship between sustainability and the production of quality ingredients.

Learning is at the heart of everything we do at the Shillim Institute
The Shillim Collective
The key outcome of this program is to build a road map for pursuing conservation of the remarkable landscape in which Shillim sits. Through workshops, we ask hard questions about what the place is, what conservation means, to whom does it “belong”; through residencies, we bring artists, scientists and others to work collaboratively on projects that express the nature of place.
Business & Sustainability
About Sustainability Workshop: Bringing business, research, academia and civil society together to exchange ideas on sustainability and to explore areas of joint action to create a positive impact on climate, biodiversity and other key dimensions under ESG.
Shillim Foundation
We promote the conservation of wild places around the globe, forwarding a new understanding as conservation as a creative practice.
